The New Group's world premiere of Sabbath’s Theater, adapted from the Philip Roth novel by John Turturro and Ariel Levy, officially opens Off-Broadway November 2.

Performances began October 10 at The Pershing Square Signature Center's Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre. Originally scheduled to end its run December 3, the production will now continue through December 17.

Directed by Jo Bonney (Cost of Living), the cast features Turturro (Severance, The Night Of, Life (x) 3) as Mickey Sabbath, Elizabeth Marvel (Other Desert Cities, Homeland, House of Cards) as Drenka, with additional roles played by Jason Kravits (Relatively Speaking, The Practice, Off the Top!).

Sabbath's Theater follows disgraced puppet maker Mickey Sabbath, whose secret life of debauchery comes to an end as he plunges into increasingly mad and maddening encounters with people from his past.

Co-adapters Levy and Turturro said in an earlier statement, "What drew us to adapting the filthiest of Philip Roth’s novels? Its morality. Its tenderness. Its comic intensity. The deep exploration of our human frailties, our repulsiveness, our vulnerability, our grief, our contradictions, and our capacity for love."

The production also has choreography by Kelly Devine, scenic and costume design by Arnulfo Maldonado, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, sound design by Mikaal Sulaiman, projection design by Alex Basco Koch, shadow puppet design by Erik Sanko, wig and makeup design by J. Jared Janas, dialect coaching by Kate Wilson, and casting by Judy Henderson. The production stage manager is Valerie A. Peterson, and the assistant stage manager is Stephen Michael Varnado.

Published in 1995, Sabbath's Theater won that year’s National Book Award and was a finalist for the 1996 Pulitzer Prize.

The world premiere is produced by The New Group with Karen Brooks Hopkins.
