News Wright to Succeed Patinkin as Director of Pearl's The Subject Was Roses Actress and director Amy Wright will assume directorial duties of the Pearl Theatre Company production of Frank D. Gilroy's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama The Subject Was Roses.

Original director Sheldon Patinkin has withdrawn from the production in order to recover from recent surgery. The Subject Was Roses will run April 9-May 9 at Off-Broadway's City Center Stage II.

"While I am saddened that friend and colleague Sheldon Patinkin has had to step down as director of the show," said Pearl artistic director J. R. Sullivan in a statement, "all of us are very pleased that distinguished actress Amy Wright is able to step in and lead the production. She is a remarkable talent in the theatre and brings her great skills to The Subject Was Roses."

"When John and Nettie Cleary welcome their son home after World War II, they're eager to resume the old roles and routines — and the old battles and silences," according to the Pearl. "But an innocent bouquet of roses and a well-meaning lie send their small world reeling. Past mistakes and misunderstandings catch up with them at last and force all three to face the truth: there are some hurts that can be healed — and some that can't."

Wright has appeared in the Broadway productions of The Fifth of July and Noises Off, as well as the original Off-Broadway cast of Mrs. Klein with Uta Hagen. For the HB Studio, Wright has directed The Cherry Orchard, Lake Hollywood, The Hot l Baltimore, The Birthday Party and Three Sisters.

The Pearl's upcoming production of Hard Times will run Feb. 5-March 28. For tickets phone (212) 598-9802 or visit PearlTheatre. New York City Center Stage II is located at West 55th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.
