He is a wild youth and his attraction and love for Cathy, another untamed spirit, provides the central conflict. Their love is thwarted by Cathy's hateful brother and by the hurt Heathcliff feels when he overhears only part of a conversation in which Cathy reveals her true feelings for him. Heathcliff runs away, only to return in order to wreak vengeance on those who have wronged him. But his rage turns inward and he destroys himself instead.
