The Yugoslav Drama Theatre located in Belgrade, Yugoslavia burnt down in a huge blaze on October 17, just shy of its 50th anniversary. According to a report on YDT's website (www.beograd.com/jdp/index.htm), the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring and completely destroyed most of the theatre's vast structure. According to YDT, repeated requests for funding in order to make the necessary repairs went ignored due to a lack of funding.

Its fans will be glad to know that the Yugoslav Drama Theatre, renowned for its performances of "classical and modern works of the world and the domestic dramatic heritage" will remain in operation. Sets that were salvaged from the blaze will be moved to other Belgrade theatres, and parts of the theatre that escaped the fire will be open for productions. Members of YDT hope to raise adequate funds in order to renovate and to continue its successful run as one of Europe's leading repertory theatres.
