Noor Theatre is a non-profit, Obie-winning, New York City based company with a mission to support, develop and produce the work of theater artists of Middle Eastern descent.
Position: The Associate Artistic Director will help oversee and execute the artistic operations of Noor’s programming, assisting the Artistic Producer with day to day tasks as well as taking on an artistic leadership role within the company. The AAD will report directly to the Artistic Director, working closely to support and expand Noor’s mission and vision. We are looking for someone who will eventually take over the position of Artistic Director, within 6 months to a year, and has a strong vision for the future of the company. A self-motivated, enthusiastic, impassioned theater maker who is skilled at creating new relationships in the theater and Middle Eastern communities.
We are very interested in candidates with Arab or Middle Eastern backgrounds, who are able to guide and inspire fellow Middle Eastern American artists and have connections within the MENA community.
Line produces Noor’s season programming, including attending casting sessions, production meetings, tech rehearsals, previews and all other production related events, including working alongside the Producing Artistic Director to guide the artistic process
Scouts artistic talent within the Middle Eastern community including playwrights, actors and directors
Nurtures and develops creative relationships with artists
Works alongside Artistic Director to develop and execute new programming and uphold and expand ongoing programming
Works with Managing Director to support fundraising efforts
Attends all Noor events and meetings
Attends board meetings
Supports and develops new relationships with international companies and artists, working alongside the Affiliate Producing Director
Representing the Artistic staff, as well as a consistent public face for donors, audiences and artists.
Engages with Noor’s artistic community and audience members
Makes artistic recommendations to Artistic Director
Additional duties as assigned by Artistic Director
Experience and/or training in theatre or a related field
Line producing experience in a theatre company or nonprofit
Must have knowledge of New York theater community, especially the Middle Eastern theater artists community
A commitment to centering antiracist, decolonizing, and anti-oppressive practices in their work.
Based in and/or able to commute to New York
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
An ability to communicate successfully with artists, staff, board and Noor’s audiences
Deadline-driven and able to manage and prioritize amongst multiple projects simultaneously
Intimate knowledge of the Middle East, it’s history, myriad cultures, languages, religions etc.
Team player and excellent collaborator
Integrity and discretion
Strong public speaking skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), social media
Excellent artistic integrity and taste
To start, a part-time monthly salary of $1250/month (averaging 15-20 hours per week). Within 6 months to a year, this position will transition to full-time with a salary of $2250/month.
The ideal candidate will be a resourceful, curious, positive professional with exceptional producing and communication skills. They will be able to generate and execute innovative ideas, especially with regard to how to realize Noor’s mission of supporting Middle Eastern theater artists. This person maintains Noor’s culture of respect, transparency and discretion in their interactions within and outside of Noor. Ideally, the candidate has exceptional artistic integrity, and brings forth a new and fresh vision to Noor’s work.
