The Play Group Theatre
White Plains, NY
The Play Group Theatre (PGT), a Westchester based non-profit educational theatre organization dedicated to providing diverse theatre making experiences and performance opportunities to children and teenagers, is seeking Teaching Artists, Directors, and Music Directors for our upcoming summer program. Camp PGT is a daytime theatre intensive program, which includes multi-discipline sessions in July/early August, and takes place in PGT’s state-of-the-art facility in White Plains, NY, easily accessible by Metro North or car.
We are seeking artists who possess imagination, flexibility and the desire to work with children and teenagers of varied ages in a creatively charged and artistically demanding, yet nurturing environment. Our teachers must be prepared to work as a member of a strong creative team, and to help our students achieve quality performances, while still giving focus to the artistic process.
The ideal candidate holds a BFA/BA/BM (MFA/MM preferred) and can teach a variety of theatre related disciplines. Our programs include classes in On Camera Acting, Shakespeare, Acting Technique, Musical Theatre, Dance, Improv, On Camera, Stage Combat, and more.
Each summer program includes a final showcase of the students’ work. We seek teachers and directors who have experience in an educational theatre setting in which they have successfully balanced a sound creative process with a quality product.
Applicants should possess:
Minimum 3-5 years teaching and/or directing experience (experience devising with children and teenagers a plus!)
excellent time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects at once
a desire to practice collaboration
grace and a sense of humor under pressure
a sense of playfulness balanced with a fierce work ethic
the qualities necessary to be a positive role model for children and teenagers
the ability to apply the “yes AND” rule of improv to the workplace
experience being bombarded with children and all their stuff and a good deal of noise, and thrive in that setting
Camp PGT includes daily classes and rehearsals, with showcases, performances, visiting artists, and several camp-wide creative activities throughout the summer. The full camp season is a five week commitment, including one staff week and four weeks of camp. Camp is held Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm at The Play Group Theatre’s facility in downtown White Plains, NY.
The Play Group Theatre has a core value of inclusion among students, staff, and audience alike. We recognize the true value that diversity serves in making our society thrive, and believe that only with a diverse arts community can we fully engage students and audiences, make meaningful art, and reflect the broad range of cultures in our wider community, both on stage and off. The Play Group Theatre is committed to building an anti-racist, gender-inclusive community. We are committed to sustaining an inclusive and equitable space where everyone who walks through the PGT doors feels, and is, valued and respected regardless of race, age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation. ethnicity, national origin, or ability. We are committed to building a stronger theatre by ensuring that all voices have an opportunity to be heard, and that The Play Group Theatre remains a safe and brave environment to share ideas.
