Male. Mid- Late 30s. The narrator from whose perspective the entire story is revealed. Michael recounts a summer spent with his mother and aunts when he was seven years old, and there is sometimes a sense that he is connecting the story as it goes.
Female. 40ish. Schoolteacher. The only wage earner of the family. Mother figure for the sisters. Fiercely devout Catholic. Dry and prickly. Fading beauty.
Mid-30s. A knitter. Quiet and contemplative, but can give Kate a run for her money in the prickliness department. May be secretly in love with Gerry and is always quick to defend him. Quiet anger growing into bitterness; she feels taken for granted.
Female. Early- mid 30s. Also a knitter. Described in the play as being “simple”, but fiery and passionate.
Male. Early- mid 30s. Michael’s father. Charming salesman and more than a bit of a cad. Is leading a double life as we learn he has a whole other family in Wales.
