ABOUT STUDIO ACTING CONSERVATORY

Studio Acting Conservatory is the premier training institution for actors and directors in Washington, DC. For 46 years, more than 12,000 alumni have gone on to important theatre and film careers. The Conservatory is led by Joy Zinoman and a 20-member faculty of committed professionals who teach 250 students—of every age and background—each year. The Conservatory has a young actors program, ages 10-17, and serves disadvantaged D.C. communities through a scholarship program that provides a theatre curriculum for talented young people. The Conservatory also offers workshops featuring some extraordinary names from the Washington theatre community.

 

The Conservatory entered an exciting new stage of development in 2019 when it left its home of 44 years at the Studio Theatre and became its own separate institution. In the past year Conservatory took the enormous step of purchasing and renovating a new building whose construction was completed in November 2020. The new 6,000 square foot building on Holmead Place, Northwest (NW)–a former church close to the Columbia Heights Metro—boasts a dynamic red facade and state-of-the-art studios, in addition to a courtyard for gatherings and performances. The Conservatory is poised to welcome students, faculty, and community members into the new facility as soon as safely possible, and to further contribute to the development of the iconic Columbia Heights neighborhood area into a vibrant arts district, already home to GALA Hispanic Theatre and Dance Institute of Washington.


JOB DESCRIPTION

The Executive Director serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the Studio Acting Conservatory. The Executive Director is responsible for the Conservatory's oversight and administration including managing the core faculty, adjunct faculty, and staff; overseeing all fundraising and marketing activities and managing the Conservatory's financial operations; and serving as the face and main point of contact for the Conservatory with the wider D.C.-area theatrical and arts communities.

 

The Conservatory is deeply committed to the work of antiracism and is in the process of engaging with the ideas and guidelines articulated in BIPOC Demands for White American Theatre. The Executive Director must be similarly committed to doing this work with the aim of creating an antiracist organization at all levels.

 

The Executive Director must possess superior communication skills, significant fundraising experience, strong managerial abilities, and a commitment to building, mentoring, motivating, and maintaining a diverse faculty and staff.

 

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

 - managing the faculty

- overseeing the organizational budget and finances

- overseeing the curriculum

- conducting and overseeing all fundraising, including individuals, foundations,

government grants, and others

- developing and managing an annual marketing plan

- supervising full-time staff

- representing the Conservatory within the wider D.C. theatrical community at

events, panels, etc.

   

Qualifications:
This position requires vision; breadth and depth of experience; good judgement; leadership skills; outstanding fundraising abilities; a collegial, consensus-driven focus; and the ability to lead and motivate in an inclusive environment.

The successful candidate will bring many of the following skills and qualities and may come from a variety of different professional backgrounds.

 

A minimum of 10 years experience in one of or a combination of the following fields:

- arts administration

- theatre performance

- non-profit fundraising

- arts education

- Experience with and a commitment to non-profit fundraising

- Excellent oral and communication skills

- Creativity, passion, accessibility and transparency

- Experience managing people and a commitment to fostering an antiracist, diverse and inclusive working environment

- Sound business and financial acumen

- Proven leadership skills

- Unquestionable ethics, integrity, transparency, and accountability in all actions

- Emotional intelligence, warmth, approachability, and humility
