I’m Fine Though
is a theatrical experiment that has one foot in the realm of live theater and the other in playing with how a YouTube viewing experience can be a theatrical event. Created by NYC-based, non-binary, & mixed-race playwright and theatermaker SMJ, I’m Fine Though follows the journey of Rae, a self-described “disgruntled content factory,” who is writing, producing, recording, and creating content every single day while dealing with trauma. They have fallen into a dark decline after a series of huge rejections and days upon days of being unable to do anything except watch YouTube. Armed with a camera, a timer, an audience, and their instrument, Rae has sixty (ish) minutes to decide whether to give up on creating or not. I'm Fine Though explores our mental health when we are alone & online and how we interact with an audience, our mind, our body, our space, and our own music.

To show the universality of content creation burnout, multiple actors portray Rae (and their partner), alternating between pieces and each of them creates their own score to accompany the lyrics. In the live theater version, the Raes are housed in recreations of their apartments. For the YouTube experience, each scene is a new YouTube video as we fall deeper and deeper into a YouTube playlist rabbit hole of Rae’s spiral. The broader themes explored are isolation, mental health, creative burnout, emotional abuse from theaters, the commercialization of our lives, and gender presentation.

I’m Fine Though was developed as a part of Fresh Ground Pepper’s BRB 2021 Retreat.
