EMILIO ESTEFAN: Male, 30-40. Cuban; confident; handsome; sometimes stumbles over his emotions... and his English; loyal. Leading man with character; must speak fluent Spanish and sing well.

NAYIB/JEREMY/YOUNG EMILIO: Male 8-12. Nayib, Gloria’s son and Emilio as a boy. Must be a strong dancer; must speak fluent Spanish and does not need to sing.

GLORIA ESTEFAN: Female, 20-30. Cuban; initially shy, opens up as the story progresses; becomes an icon; sharp sense of humor; good actress, star quality; must speak fluent Spanish and sing and move well.

LITTLE GLORIA: Female, 10-12. Cuban; innocent, but smart and self reliant; slightly sad, but always full of hope; must speak fluent Spanish and sing well.

GLORIA FAJARDO: Female, 50-60. Cuban; Gloria’s mother; brassy; strong willed; Latin matriarch; survivor; biting humor; must speak fluent Spanish and sing well.

CONSUELO: Female, 65-75. Cuban; Gloria’s Grandmother; Cuban stage mother; sometimes an apparition; wise; loving; warm; Gloria’s guardian angel; must speak fluent Spanish and be able to carry a tune.

CALOGERO: Male, 20-30, White—of European Descent. A likable Italian-American teenager. He steps in and out of narrating the show. Excellent singer (tenor or very high baritone, with a flair for '60s rock-and-roll) who moves well.

SONNY: Male, 30-40, White—of European Descent. An Italian. The number one man in the neighborhood. He’s the leader of the wise guys. Powerful and charismatic. Strong singer; full voice to G above middle C a plus, should be “at home” singing in the styles of Frank Sinatra/Tony Bennett/Dean Martin/Bobby Darin.

LORENZO: Male, 30-40, White—of European Descent. An Italian. Calogero’s father. Strong and sympathetic. He works as a bus driver. Excellent tenor or high baritone; ability to express honest emotion while singing more important than vocal fireworks.

YOUNG CALOGERO: Male, 7-11, White—of European Descent. Must believably play 9 years old. Calogero’s younger self. Excellent singer who moves very well.

ROSINA: Female, 30-40, White—of European Descent. An Italian. Calogero’s mother. Sensible and beautiful. Strong singer; warm mezzo or alto voice preferred.

JANE: Female, African American. An adult actor 18+ to play 17. African American. Calogero falls in love with her. Striking and smart. Excellent singer who moves well; should be completely “at home” as the lead singer of a girl group.

JESSIE & TYRONE: Male, 20-30, African American. Tyrone is Jane’s brother, and his friend Jesse. Excellent singers; tenors (high C). Excellent dancers.

MARIA RAINER: Female, 20-30, Soprano. Strong singer/actor. She is a postulant at Nonnberg Abbey who is adventurous, joyful and courageous. She is free spirited, warm, gentle, kind and determined.
She he loves the outdoors and singing and is unsure if she really wants to be a nun. Always has good intentions but is obviously not suited for the obedience needed for life in the Abbey. Dance ability and the ability to play the guitar a plus.

CAPTAIN GEORG VON TRAP: Male, 35-45, Baritone . Excellent singer/ actor with a commanding presence. He is the Father and Patriarch of the von Trapp family; a retired Austrian naval captain. After the death of his wife, he raised his children the only way he knew how-in, a military fashion, to repress the sadness of his loss. Underneath he is warm, understanding and determined. Movement ability and the ability to play the guitar a plus.

ELSA SCHRAEDER: Female, 35-40. Mezzo-Soprano who moves well. Strong actress/singer. She is attractive and wealthy; love interest of von Trapp until he falls for Maria. She only knows the high society way of life and is a baroness of taste, elegance and sophistication. She is dignified and mature.

MAX DETWEILER: Male, 30-40, Bari-Tenor who moves well. Strong comic actor/singer. He is a music director for the Austrian government; charming, witty and very funny. He’s a good friend of both the Baroness and von Trapp.

MOTHER ABBESS: Female, 45-70. Powerful legit Soprano with a wide vocal range and a strong actress. She is the head of Nonnberg Abbey and mother figure to all of the nuns. She is caring and gentle but also a strong leader.

SISTER BERTHE: Female. Mezzo-Soprano. SISTER MAGARETTA: Female. Mezzo-Soprano. SISTER SOPHIA: Female. Mezzo-Soprano.

ROLF GRUBER: Male, 17. Tenor with dance ability. He starts as an intimidated telegram delivery boy to and changes into a young man with military power. He is Liesl’s suitor; very pleasant yet somewhat aggressive.

LIESL VON TRAP: Female, 16. Mezzo-Soprano with dance ability. She is a starry-eyed girl becoming a woman who needs guidance and friendship and finds it in Maria. She is the oldest of the von Trapp children. She is blossoming into a young lady with an interest in boys. She has a maternal side and cares very deeply for her younger siblings.

FREIDRICH VON TRAPP: Male, 14. Strong singer. He has a tough exterior and very much tries to be “the man” of the family in his father’s absence.

LOUISA VON TRAPP: Female, 13. Strong singer. Rebellious. She idolizes Leisl.

KURT VON TRAPP: Male, 10. A boy soprano with a strong falsetto. He is gentle and mischievous.

BRIGITTA VON TRAPP: Female, 9. Strong singer She is smart and insightful and not at all shy about sharing her observations and opinions.

MARTA VON TRAPP: Female, 7. Strong singer; She is very sweet and gentle.

GRETL VON TRAPP: Female; 6. Strong singer. The youngest of the Von Trapp children.

HERR ZELLER: Male, 40-50. High baritone. He is stern and unsmiling; a Nazi sympathizer whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line;

FRANZ: Male, 50-60. Baritone. He is the Butler with a dry wit and a sense of humor. He can be rather formal but not without spirit; very German.

FRAU SCHMIDT: Female, 50-60. Soprano or Mezzo; She is the housekeeper and has been overseeing the children prior to Maria’s arrival. She is strong, domineering and opinionated. She is also stoic and does her job efficiently but without affection.
