Parallel 45 Theatre produces cutting-edge interpretations of plays & musicals, giving familiar stories new life – and fresh relevance – for our northwest Michigan audience. Every summer, Parallel 45 produces a festival of plays in the relaxed setting of the Civic Center Park in Traverse City. Artists from across the country and around the world convene on P45’s new, state-of-the-art stage to perform adventurous, boundary-pushing musicals, plays, and devised works for all ages--rotating daily.
Our summer education program began in 2020 with a series of outdoor, socially distanced camps to bring a sense of normalcy through adventure and joy back into the lives of our youngest community members. The success of this past summer has allowed us to make our Outdoor Theatre Adventure Camp a yearly event held in conjunction with our Youthquake Company program for advanced student actors and Summer Theatre Festival of rotating productions created by professional artists from all over the country.
P45 is currently seeking applicants for the position of LEAD TEACHING ARTIST at our Outdoor Theatre Adventure Camp. This position will work closely with the Education Director, Camp Manager, and Assistant Teaching Artist. This socially-distanced camp for 3rd-6th graders features high energy fun with theatre games and classic summer camp activities like water balloons and tie dye. Each camp is one week and runs Monday-Friday afternoons for a culmination of 4 weeks of camp. This position entails taking the lead in creating lesson plans for the four week-long camp sessions in collaboration with Education Director and camp team, serving as a mentor to the emerging educator in the role of Assistant Teaching Artist, working in collaboration with the Camp Manager to create systems for smooth camp operation, implementing social distancing measures at camp, and taking the lead in teaching and delegating teaching responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience working with children in a theatre performance or summer camp setting
- 25 years of age or older
- Active interest in learning P45 methods for social distancing in a learning environment
- CPR/First Aid certified or willing to become certified before camp begins
- Strong time management skills
- Enthusiasm for creating engaging lesson plans for outdoor learning
- Interest in mentoring an emerging teaching artist
- Positive attitude and ability to adapt to surroundings
- Ability to lead high-energy, physical group activities outdoors for 4+ hours daily
- Classroom management skills with groups of 15+ students
Compensation is up to $3,000 with company housing and travel reimbursement provided. All training and camp sessions will be held outdoors and socially-distanced, with students and staff wearing masks throughout drop-off and pick-up times. Contract dates are June 15-July 26, 2021 with planning sessions held via Zoom prior to arrival. There is no camp the week of July 5-9.
