MANAGING DIRECTOR

Legacy Theatre is a non-profit producing professional regional theatre located in an historic theatre in the quaint village of Stony Creek, which is in the shoreline town of Branford, CT. Newly restored and opened in April of 2021, the 126-seat theater is home to seasons of inspiring and uplifting theater through its MainStage shows, Broadway concert series, classes, and outreach. The Legacy Theatre is seeking a Full-Time Managing Director for its upcoming 2023 season.

POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Managing Director of Legacy Theatre will demonstrate strong executive leadership skills in managing the team to represent a best-in-class regional theatre. Strong financial management, appreciation for theater and an acumen for fundraising is required. The Managing Director will lead staff, Board members and the community in realizing the Theatre’s mission. The Managing Director will report to the Board, participate in an annual review and works closely with the Artistic Director to achieve specific goals. The Managing Director is responsible for programmatic excellence, operational integrity and strategic initiatives. The Managing Director leads, oversees, implements, and ensures the sustainability of Legacy Theatre’s operations through fundraising, financial management, compliance, administration, and communications.

The Managing Director will guide the development of a vision and strategy for the organization’s long-term growth and will provide strong leadership for the board, staff, and the community. The Managing Director is charged with enabling Legacy Theatre to realize its goals for artistic excellence, community service, education, financial stability, fundraising, and audience engagement. The Managing Director is responsible for rendering the Artistic Director’s vision into practicable initiatives that are financially sound and supported, and which galvanize the Board, staff and extended community behind it. The Managing Director is responsible for the overall business, administrative, and operational management of Legacy Theatre. This includes partnering with the Board of Trustees on fundraising and marketing, with the Artistic Director in establishing theater programming and with Accounting Consultant on budgeting, financial management and information systems.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1) Executive Leadership

a. The Managing Director, with support from the Artistic Director and the Board of Trustees, will update, maintain, and execute Legacy Theatre’s Strategic Plan with personal emphasis on financial management, organizational structure, fundraising and systems, tax and finance compliance and overall operations and marketing - in support of Legacy Theatre’s Mission and Vision. The Managing Director is responsible for developing Legacy Theatre’s business plan and holding all employees accountable to this plan as well as updating this plan regularly. It is very important for the Managing Director to maintain a strong collaboration with the Development staff, the Artistic Director and the Board of Trustees at all times.

2) Fundraising

a. Be responsible to the Board for the overall Development Plan and Budget, manage all Development and fundraising programs to help meet Annual Campaign goals with support from the Artistic Director, Development staff and others.

b. Oversee the execution of the Annual Campaign

c. Optimize the use of the constituent database and ensure that best practices are being used in inputting and analyzing data and using this information to drive fundraising and the reputation of Legacy Theatre

d. Assist in identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors in support of the Theatre’s Annual Campaign

3) Financial Management

a. Develop the comprehensive, annual operating and per-event season budgets

b. Maintain financial reporting systems for Accounting Consultant and for all tax compliance and 501(c) (3) status needs

c. Assist in creating Box Office/Ticketing/ Administrative Best Practices for the theater

d. Provide financial analysis and recommendations to guide all significant financial decisions

4) External Relations

a. Serve as a key representative of Legacy Theatre in the community, including cultivation of donors, funding institutions, social media presence, and government agencies

b. Provide additional support for and attend meetings, fundraisers, celebrations and opening nights among other special events

5) Management

a. Hire, supervise and evaluate all employees and volunteers that support administration and operations of the Theatre. Foster a culture of teamwork, generous collaboration, clear communication, effective delegation, and mutual support

b. Ensure that Legacy’s employment and volunteer policies and handbook are current and complete and support the organization’s future staffing goals and needs

c. Ensure that Legacy’s employment and volunteer policies and reporting are consistent with all laws, rules and regulations governing employment in the State of Connecticut

d. Manage, coach, and supervise all volunteers except those who report to the Artistic Director

6) Board Relations

a. Report and communicate regularly with the Board of Trustees to further the Mission and Vision of Legacy Theatre

b. Partner with the Board Chair to identify need for committees and prioritize work of the Board

c. Provide regular written reports to the Board

d. Work to grow the Board through active Board cultivation and recruitment

e. Serve as staff liaison for Finance, Nominating and other standing and ad hoc committees where helpful to the Board of Trustees

7) Contract Management

a. Oversee all of Legacy’s contracting with external agents, including Actor’s Equity Association, insurance agreements, leases, rights/royalty agreements, vendors, etc.

8) Technology Management

a. Ensure that the organization has the information, communications, and technology systems that it needs to be effective

b. Assist in organizational planning of Legacy’s props, sets and costume house to ensure the plan supports Artistic Director’s goals and objectives
