As a part of our Contemporaries of Color series, exploring classical playwrights of color, Hamlet Isn’t Dead is seeking puppeteers to present Death of Hamlet in the classic Turkish shadow puppetry style of Karagöz. As the performance will be virtual, it will require set-up and manipulation of traditional puppets by the performers in the performers’ space. Actors will work with Ayhan Hulagu, founder of the Karagôz Theatre Company to learn the style, voices, and tradition of these characters and this work.
Rehearsals will begin in January with performances at the end of March. Actors will need to spend time outside of scheduled rehearsal practicing with the puppets to be able to manipulate them as fluidly as possible. Prior puppetry work preferred but not required. Specifically interested in hiring BIPOC artists or artists with connections to the art form for these roles.
