Williamstown Theatre Festival
Williamstown, MA 01267
Williamstown Theatre Festival is now accepting submissions for its 2020 Apprentice Program, a hands-on, fully immersive introduction to the world of professional theatre during the summer season of the Tony Award-winning theatre. This program is designed to be a bridge between educational and professional theatre. Apprentices take part in a hybrid curriculum that brings together training and practical application in the interest of launching careers.
There are two pillars of the apprentice program. The first is artistic learning: throughout the summer, apprentices attend classes in various forms of training with a focus on acting. Apprentices also audition for multiple projects over the course of the summer: WTF’s Late Night Cabaret ensemble, directing intern-helmed projects in the black box theatre, our COMMUNITY WORKS production, and costumed crew positions on the Main Stage and Nikos Stage.
In addition to our resident teachers’ courses and acting opportunities, we offer frequent masterclasses, workshops, and panels led by our visiting guest artists: producing your own work, playwriting, resume formatting, maintaining a healthy work/life balance, career networking, and generating a professional website. Past masterclasses, workshops, and panels have been led by artists such as Lewis Black, Elizabeth Banks, Bradley Cooper, Michael Grief, Allison Janney, Joe Mantello, Chita Rivera, Sam Rockwell, and Marisa Tomei.
The second pillar of the apprentice program is about experiencing the Festival in its entirety, a deeper dive into everything necessary to build a production. Apprentices help build our sets. They greet patrons in the lobby. They run lines with our Equity performers. They pick up guest artists from the train station. They hang lights. They assist the marketing department. Though each day’s schedule is different, everyone in the apprentice program will have worked with every single production department by summer’s end. In short, and with no understatement, apprentices are the lifeblood of the Williamstown Theatre Festival.
Williamstown Theatre Festival, in conjunction with the Kennedy Center’s Rosemary Kennedy Internship Initiative / VSA, offers scholarships for Apprentices between the ages of 18-22 with disabilities. If you qualify and would like to be considered for the Rosemary Kennedy Scholarship, please mention “Rosemary Kennedy / VSA” and include your age and disability in a one-page assessment of scholarship need.
As the apprentice program is meant to be an on-ramp into the world of the professional theatre, preference is given to candidates who are juniors and seniors in college and to recent college graduates. The application deadline is March 2.
