DESCRIPTION

Founded in 1972, Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning is the only multidisciplinary urban arts center—and only member of the historic public-private partnership, the Cultural Institutions Group—located in Southeast Queens, arguably the most diverse neighborhood in the city’s most diverse borough, where 2.25 million African-American, Caribbean-American, Indo-Asian, African, Latinx, and Caucasian, Native American and Indigenous residents, artists and audiences live, work and play. Our mission is to offer quality visual, performing, and literary arts, and to provide accessible education programs to encourage participation in the arts.

Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) is building new and ongoing relationships with inventive, adventurous, boundary-breaking Teaching Artists for both in-person and digital-learning opportunities for individuals of all ages. We’re especially eager to meet artists with great ideas for teaching as well as highly experienced artists who will reenergize our institution.

Disciplines may include, but may not be limited to:

Performing Arts (e.g., Theater, Spoken Word, Slam Poetry, Improv, Public Speaking);

Music (e.g., Vocal and Choir, Rap and Hip-Hop, Piano and Guitar and other instruments);

Dance (e.g., Modern, Hip-Hop, Latin);

Visual Arts (e.g., Drawing, Painting, Mural Design, Sculpture);

Fitness, Wellness and Health;

Games and Gaming

 JCAL’s School of the Arts reopened in July 2021; an expanded class schedule is being created for the fall. Our teaching artists may also work on one or more of the following programs: JCAL Education at Home (branded video instruction); Cultural After-School Adventures (CASA) and SU-CASA programs (spring); JCAL School Assembly / Family Matinee series (seasonal); Queens International Children’s Festival (annual); JCAL Talks (monthly speaker series); JCAL Reads (seasonal literary series); JCAL College Access (seasonal); and Prescribing the Arts (social practice unit).

Please submit a short cover letter and resume highlighting your arts background and/or teaching experience to JCAL Director of Education Juan Carlos Salinas at jsalinas@jcal.org. If you wish, please include your expected or preferred hourly and/or per project rate. No phone calls.

JCAL is an Equal Opportunity Employer and actively honors the values of its board-approved Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Plan, with the goal of building and nurturing a culturally diverse, community responsive team. Minorites and women are especially welcome to apply.
