DESCRIPTION

The Old Stone House (OSH) & Washington Park is a 3.5 acre historic site and New York City Parks Department public space with gardens, playgrounds and recreation areas located between 4th and 5th Avenues and 3rd and 5th Streets in Brooklyn. It is a gathering place for the Gowanus and Park Slope communities and attracts additional visitors from around the world. Our busy outdoor space serves more than 500,000 annual park users, and more than 40,000 people visit the Old Stone House each year.

OSH is a reconstruction of a 1699 Dutch farmhouse, built on Lenape land. There is a permanent exhibit focused on the history of the site from the Lenape through the American Revolutionary War, and a contemporary art exhibition program that is reinstalled four times a year. Additional cultural events programming includes music, dance, film and theater performances both indoors and outdoors, many in partnership with colleague organizations in the community. We also have an active park permitting and private event rental schedule.

OSH is seeking an outgoing Visitor Services Coordinator. Primary responsibilities include sharing the history of the site from the Lenape through the 1930’s reconstruction, as well tracking and confirming permit and event requests.

The Visitor Services Coordinator:

Reports to OSH Program Director
Manages contracts for park permits and house rentals using the OSH calendar and permit tracker; prints and posts permit signs
Manages public hours, providing visitor support and public history information
Manages special events occurring during open hours, and coordinates with the Program Director, Director of Education and the Executive Director on additional public programs
Welcomes guests for indoor and outdoor parties and events; receives rental payments; helps with tracking payments
Records/updates visitor demographic info on the tracker
Manages lost/found items, Brooklyn Book Bodega drop offs and other special campaigns
Manages gift shop inventory and sales
Maintains order of the permanent and temporary exhibits before, during and after open hours

This busy job requires:

A high degree of organization and engagement with the public, including many families with young children
Professionalism, patience, flexibility and manners with a diverse population
Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize projects
Strong listening skills
Strong attention to detail and administrative skills
Ability to interact with the public and staff in a positive, outgoing manner
Ability to enforce OSH policies and procedures while maintaining excellent customer service
Ability to troubleshoot customer service issues; assessing when to escalate to management
Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment, but also independently
Must be able to work Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and some Holidays and evenings (OSH Is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years).


Required on-site hours include:

Noon – 5 pm on Friday

10 am – 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday (open hours Noon – 4 pm)

With up to an additional 5 hours off site to respond to rental and permit requests within 48 hours Tuesday through Thursday, for a total of approximately 26 hours per week. Additional event hours may be available if you choose.

The salary is $25 per hour, paid monthly.
