Summary:  This position is responsible for leading the Technical Operations of the CFTA’s performance spaces in collaboration with the Director of the Center for The Arts. The technical theater operations include light and sound operators, all related equipment, and systems, set up / take down of all events, converting the stage spaces to the next configuration and managing the labor associated with these events. Due to the operating hours and variety of tasks involved in this position, it is critical that the individual works with a great deal of independence with sound judgment.  We are seeking a creative visionary who can dream up an environment and then physically create it.  Experience in Scenic design, construction, welding, rigging, and drafting are a must. This a chance to create your own technical theater program from the ground up. The ability to transfer your passion of your craft to students and ultimately teach them how to facilitate your designs is a major focal point of this position. 

This position is responsible for all technical aspects of the Center For The Arts . The Center for the Arts is a 30-year-old arts center which features a main auditorium seating 750. The main auditorium features a 50ft wide by 40 ft deep stage with a fly rigging system, a state-of-the-art sound system, 40 ft wide by 30 ft tall Led video wall, a led lighting system and a clear com headset system.  The Center for the arts also features a black box theater space, an art gallery, 5 classrooms, 9 practice rooms, a recording studio and a sound and lighting booth in addition to office spaces.  This position is responsible for oversight, inventory, maintenance, and upgrades to all technical elements for every part of the building.

The Director will serve as production manager and production designer for the Three Mainstage Theater productions as well as the Fall, Winter and Spring, Music and Dance Recitals.  An ability to design an environment and quickly build and install it with student help is essential.  Expect to be working on new designs and implementations on a revolving door/ consistent basis.  The Center for the arts also serves as a road house allowing several companies and clients to rent the space when available. This position will work closely with the Assistant Technical Director to facilitate the needs of all rentals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • When school is in session, the Theater Technical Director leads the student Theater Tech program by establishing student leaders, training, and organization for student technical directors to perform roles in: sound, costuming, lighting, and stage management. 
  • Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, video, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
  • Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
  • Designs, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting and sound systems for theatre, dance, music, and other productions and projects; assists guest designers and arts with technical matters.
  • Supervises and assists with set and stage construction and management.
  • In collaboration with the Theater Director, assists in recruiting, training and assignment of volunteer or paid technical staff for individual shows.
  • Orient facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations; facilitates the use of the technical facilities by those renting the facility.
  • Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.
  • Attends technical Week rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting the show.
  • Supports rehearsal and production of the following productions:  Jazz Band, Orchestra, Vocal Music, and Dance. Fall Musical, Winter Musical, Spring Play.

Because the Theater Technical Director may be called upon to deal with a wide range of technical issues, he or she benefits from a working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, dance, and music productions and presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Qualifications

·         Expert knowledge of theater technical operations; including set design, video, sound engineering, lighting, rigging and stage operations. 

·         Carpentry skills are preferred.

·         Ability to organize and plan set design.

·         Ability to manage inventory and budgets. 

·         Must work well with teenagers and have an optimistic upbeat personality.

·         Able to work as a team in collaboration with others to meet performance goals.
