The Lion officially opened June 26, following previews that began June 10. Directed by Sean Daniels, the five-week limited engagement is presented as part of Manhattan Theatre Club's 2013-14 season of The Studio at Stage II – Harold and Mimi Steinberg New Play Series at New York City Center – Stage II.
Here's how the production is billed: "A true story of love, loss, family loyalty, and the redemptive power of music. Following an award-winning run at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, writer/performer Benjamin Scheuer (winner of the ASCAP Cole Porter Award for songwriting) shares his gripping coming-of-age tale."
The song "Cookie-tin Banjo" is produced by Geoff Kraly and features guitar and vocals by Scheuer, harpsichord by Jacob Sacks, upright bass by Eivind Opsvik, and additional vocals by Jean Rohe. It is engineered and mixed by Grammy Award-winning Pat Dillett. Scheuer is a 2013 ASCAP Cole Porter Songwriting Award winner. His work has been featured at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (2013 Musical Theatre Network Award for Best Lyrics); The St. James Theatre, London; The Jermyn Street Theatre, London; and Lincoln Center. He leads the band Escapist Papers.
The creative team for The Lion includes Neil Patel (scenic design), Jennifer Caprio (costume consultant), Ben Stanton (lighting design) and Leon Rothenberg (sound design).
MTC is pricing all tickets during the five-week run at $30. Tickets are available by calling (212) 581-1212 or visiting nycitycenter.org.
