Joan Rivers, a comedian whose tongue was often tart and whose talent for reinventing herself led to an unusually long and varied career, died Sept. 4, 2014. On Aug. 28, she was rushed to the hospital after suffering from cardiac arrest during an endoscopy at a clinic in New York City. She was 81.
