SYNOPSIS: Esther Mills, a shy African-American seamstress, specializes in ornate lingerie. Her customers -- ranging from a black prostitute to a white society matron -- are friendly, but Esther’s deepest bond is with a Jewish fabric merchant who shares her love of beautiful things. Will a romantic correspondence with a Panama Canal laborer bring her the life companion she yearns for?
