Tony Awards 25 DAYS OF TONYS: Josh Groban Says His Tony Nomination Was an ‘Incredible Surprise’ The three-time Grammy and now Tony nominee explains why his recognition for The Great Comet was so unexpected.

“[I] truly was not expecting it,” Josh Groban told Playbill of his Tony nomination the morning after receiving the exciting news. “It’s been a crowded season. I think one of the things that makes our show so special is its ensemble nature. The fact that myself, Denée [Benton], Lucas [Steele], this cast were recognized in this way was just an incredible surprise and one that just made me overjoyed.”

Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 marks Groban’s Broadway debut, but the singer grew up a theatre kid. “It was my experience at the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts,” says Groban. “That was the school where I met great teachers, like Norman Cohen and Gary Soerenson, and I have just been so thrilled to think back at that time and think these were the experiences where I got my first taste of what that could be like and realize it was something I could do.

He continues, “This community this year has been the biggest dream.”
