News 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Directed by Lauren Kennedy, Kicks Off Hot Summer Nights Series Theatre Raleigh kicks off its 2013 Hot Summer Nights Series with William Finn's The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which is currently playing the Kennedy Theater at the Duke Energy Center through May 5.

Directed by Lauren Kennedy, the ensemble cast includes Adam Poole (Chip Tolentino), Sterling Hurst (Douglas Panch), Jesse Gephart (Leaf Coneybear), Morgan Parpan (Logainne Schwartzy), Katie Lynch (Marcy Park), Jade Arnold (Mitch Mahoney), Cameron Caudill (Olive Ostrovsky), Heather Hamby Maggs (Rona Lisa Peretti) and Jeff Vizcaino (William Barfee).

The show that has adult actors playing smart, misfit kids in a spelling bee is written by composer-lyricist William Finn and librettist Rachel Sheinkin (who won a Tony Award for the script). The conception is by Rebecca Feldman.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, according to press notes, is a "hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime."

The creative team includes Chris Bernier (set and lighting designer), Eric Collins (sound designer), Eric Fotre Leach (music director), Liz Ray (production stage manager), LeGrande Smith (costume designer), Richard Roland (associate artistic director), Edie Weichert (prop master), Michele Weathers (general manager), Stevan Dupor (sound) and Bobby Furmage (wardrobe supervisor).
