News 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards Presented Jan. 16; "Phantom" and "Closer" Up for Top Honors The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented Jan. 16 live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

WNBC-TV (Channel 4 in the metropolitan area) will broadcast the annual awards ceremony beginning at 8 PM ET; check local listings. NBC will also present a one-hour special prior to the ceremony, which spotlights celebrity arrivals.

The Golden Globes honor achievements in film and television during the calendar year. Among the stars scheduled to present awards at this year's event are Patricia Arquette, Kate Beckinsale, Halle Berry, Jim Carrey, Will Ferrell, Topher Grace, Goldie Hawn, Dustin Hoffman, Kate Hudson, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Diane Keaton, Anthony LaPaglia, Matthew McConaughey, Megan Mullally, Al Pacino, Mekhi Phifer, Lisa Marie Presley, Prince, Tim Robbins, Meryl Streep, Charlize Theron, Usher, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts and Renee Zellweger. All five "Desperate Housewives" — Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria and Nicollette Sheridan — will also present at the Globes ceremony.

Nominations for the 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced Dec. 13. "The Phantom of the Opera," Joel Schumacher's film adaptation of the long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, nabbed three nominations, including Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy. Its competitors include "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "The Incredibles," "Ray" and "Sideways." Emmy Rossum was also nominated for her performance as aspiring opera diva Christine Daae. Rossum will vie for the Best Performance By an Actress in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy Award in a category that also includes Annette Bening ("Being Julia"), Ashley Judd ("De-Lovely"), Kate Winslett ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") and Renee Zellweger ("Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason"). "Learn to Be Lonely," the one new song penned for the "Phantom" film, was nominated in the Best Original Song category. Other nominated tunes: "Accidentally in Love" from "Shrek 2," "Believe" from "The Polar Express," "Million Voices" from "Hotel Rwanda" and "Old Habits Die Hard" from "Alfie."

The film adaptation of Patrick Marber's "Closer" fared even better, nabbing five nominations, including one for Best Motion Picture—Drama. The other competitors in that category include "The Aviator," "Finding Neverland," "Hotel Rwanda," "Kinsey" and "Million Dollar Baby." "Closer" also received nominations for Best Performance By an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Natalie Portman), Best Performance By an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Clive Owen), Best Director—Motion Picture (Mike Nichols) and Best Screenplay (Patrick Marber).

Other nominations of interest to theatre fans: Edie Falco, recently on Broadway in the revival of 'night, Mother, received a nomination for Best Performance By an Actress in a Television Series—Drama for her work on "The Sopranos." Stage and screen star Sarah Jessica Parker was also nominated for her work on the final season of "Sex and the City." Her competitors in the Best Performance By an Actress in a Television Series—Musical or Comedy category include Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman — all for "Desperate Housewives" — and "Will & Grace" star Debra Messing. Theatre regulars Paul Giamatti ("Sideways"), Kevin Kline ("De-Lovely") and Kevin Spacey ("Beyond the Sea") were all nominated in the Best Performance By an Actor in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy category. Also nominated in that group: Jim Carrey ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") and Jamie Foxx ("Ray"). The Best Performance By an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television category also features several theatre favorites: Glenn Close ("The Lion in Winter," also nominated for Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV), Blythe Danner ("Back When We Were Grown Ups") and Miranda Richardson ("The Lost Prince") as well as Julianna Margulies ("The Grid") and Hilary Swank ("Iron Jawed Angels").

Five-time Golden Globe Award winner Robin Williams will receive the Hollywood Press' highest honor, the Cecil B. DeMille Award for "outstanding contribution to entertainment."
