The American Tradition, the new play from Ray Yamanouchi, began performances January 25 ahead of a January 30 opening at 13th Street Repertory Company. The limited engagement from the New Light Theatre Project, directed by Axel Alvin, Jr., is set to run through February 16.

Set in Antebellum America with an absurd and Brechtian twist, The American Tradition follows Eleanor (Sydney Cole Alexander) cross-dressing as a white planter, and her husband, Bill (Martin K. Lewis) pretending to be her loyal servant as they attempt to escape to the free state of Pennsylvania. Completing the cast are Hunter Canning, Alex Herrald, and Danie Steel.

The design team for the world premiere is made up of Brian Dudkiewicz (scenic design), Elaine Wong (lighting design), Samantha Rose Lind (costume design), Enrico de Trizio (sound design), and Leila Ben-Abdallah (prop design). The fight director is Leighton Samuels, and the production stage manger is Chelsea Friday.
