News A Raisin in the Sun Begins Performances at Arizona Theatre Company Jan. 10 Lorraine Hansberry's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama A Raisin in the Sun — a Cleveland Play House-Penumbra Theatre Company-Arizona Theatre Company — co-production arrives in Tucson Jan. 10.

Lou Bellamy, artistic director of the Penumbra Theatre Company in St. Paul, directs the production, which played a previous engagement at the Cleveland Play House last fall. Raisin will play St. Paul's Penumbra in March.

The Arizona Theatre Company production of A Raisin in the Sun continues through Jan. 31 in Tucson before moving onto Phoenix from Feb. 5-22.

The cast includes David Alan Anderson (Walter Lee), Franchelle Stewart Dorn (Lena), Erika LaVonn (Ruth Younger), Damron Russel Armstrong (Bobo), Scott Campbell (Moving Man), Aric Generette Floyd (Travis), Kyle Haden (George Murchison), Bakesta King (Beneatha), Adeoye Mabogunje (Jospeh Asagai), Marvin Mallory (Mover) and Patrick O'Brien (Karl Lindner).

Press notes for Raisin in the Sun read: "When Lena Younger, the family matriarch, receives a life insurance settlement of $10,000 after the death of her husband, she and her family must decide how to use her windfall. Lena’s son Walter Lee dreams of owning a liquor store as a means of providing financial stability for the family. Lena, however, wants to move the family out of the Chicago South Side ghetto where they have long resided and she uses the money to buy a house in an all-white neighborhood. When their future neighbors resist the Youngers’ move, Walter Lee for the first time begins to value what money can’t buy, and in the process he achieves a new level of self respect and pride."

Designing the production are Vicki Smith (scenic design), Mathew J. LeFebvre (costume design), Michelle Habeck (lighting design) and Jim Swonger (sound design).
