At the end of the day, Madeleine Doherty must be awfully tired.
On July 30, the actress celebrates 10 years of performing in the Broadway company of Les Miserables. She began rehearsals for the New York production of the international blockbuster July 16, 1990, and made her debut as an ensemble member July 30.
During Doherty's time singing "One Day More," "At the End of the Day" and other rousing ensemble numbers from the Claude Michel Schonberg-Alain Boublil musical, the show moved from the Broadway Theatre to the Imperial.
She has seen cast members come and go and she survived the famous recasting of most of the company around the time of the show's 10th anniversary. Her son, Casey Ray, was six when she began in the show; he's now a teenager.
In addition to her ensemble track, she understudies the role of Madame Thenardier. She also spent three years as the Les Miz dance captain. Doherty is an adjunct faculty member at New York University. Before joining Les Miz, Doherty appeared in the original Off-Broadway company of Romance/Romance and was The Gumbie Cat/Griddlebone in the Vienna staging of Cats.
Les Miserables opened on Broadway March 12, 1987, and has been seen by 7.5 million people.
