South Florida's oldest and most prestigious arts honors were handed out at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, in a benefit performance which raises scholarships for South Florida arts students. The ceremony recognized work from 2008.
The event included a special tribute honoring Carbonell Awards co-founder and executive director Jack Zink, who covered the arts for all of the region's major newspapers for nearly 40 years before his death last summer.
Mosaic Theatre Company's production of Conor McPherson's The Seafarer won five Carbonells, including Best Production of a Play.
Adding Machine by Jason Loewith and Josh Schmidt, lauded for a separate Chicago production that moved to Off-Broadway, got its Florida premiere by GableStage, and won as Best Production of a Musical. It took home seven Carbonells.
The Best New Work of 2008 was William Mastrosimone's Dirty Businesss, produced by Florida Stage. In the Stock/Road Show Awards, representing work of tours or commercial producers, Sweeney Todd was named Best Production, and actress Judy Kaye (Mrs. Lovett in that musical) was Best Actress in that division.
The Carbonells focus on work in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
Here are the recipients and nominees of the 33rd Annual Carbonell Awards. Winners are marked in boldface and designated with an asterisk.
