Former Grease! star Adrian Zmed has replaced Jeff Conaway — of "Taxi" fame — in the two-person play Same Time, Next Year, which will begin a limited tour in the fall.

Conaway, who was to star opposite Mackenzie Phillips in the two-person comedy, withdrew from the production after breaking his arm. Zmed, star of the TV series "T.J. Hooker" and the hit film "Bachelor Party," will assume the role of George opposite Phillips' Doris, when the Bernard Slade two-hander plays the Shubert Theatre in New Haven from Sept. 17-22.

The duo then head to the Opera House in Lexington, KY for performances on Sept. 24 and 25. The complete tour itinerary as off press time follows:

Both stars may tour the play again next season, a spokesman for the show said.

Zmed, who appeared with Phillips in the national tour of Grease!, has also starred in productions of Chicago, Falsettos and Blood Brothers. Phillips, best known for her work on TV's "One Day at a Time," has appeared in the films "American Graffiti," "Love Child," "When" and the Disney television show "So Weird." Directed by Curt Wollan, Same Time, Next Year concerns a couple — married to others — who rendezvous once a year over a period that spans 1951-1975. Each scene takes place exactly five years later.

Same Time, Next Year opened at Broadway's Brooks Atkinson Theatre in March 1975. Directed by Gene Saks, the production featured Ellen Burstyn and Charles Grodin. The show transferred to the Ambassador Theatre in May 1978 and played through September of that year. Burstyn repeated her role in the 1978 film, which co-starred "MASH" actor Alan Alda.
