The current national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicalization of T.S. Eliot's poems, "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," will close Dec. 19 in East Lansing, Michigan, after a record-breaking 12 years on the road.

Although Cats has been on the road since December of 1983, the fourth national company has been traveling continuously for the last 12 and a half years. The show became the longest running tour in American theatre history Nov. 18, 1997, surpassing Oklahoma!. Cats reached its 5,000th performance milestone July 7, 1999 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

A revamped and streamlined tour of the show is expected to go out again in the fall of 2000, according to a Cats press representative.

Cats became the longest running Broadway show June 19, 1997. Currently in its 17th season, the musical, which won 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical has been seen by over 8, 350,000 people. Cats was directed by Trevor Nunn. Gillian Lynne choreographed the cast of 36 actor-singer-dancers who play exotically named felines from Grizabella, the Glamour Cat to the mysterious Mr. Mistofeles. Cats produced the hit song, "Memory."
