News After Broadway Growing Pains, 13 The Musical Returns to NYC in Revised Version April 23 Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown's coming-of-age musical 13, which played a limited Broadway run in 2008, makes its New York return in a revised production April 23 at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre.

The Children's Acting Company presents the engagement of the pop-rock scored musical, which will play six performances through April 27. Artistic director Mimi Stuart directs with choreography by Missy Diaz. Mitchell Raftery serves as musical director.

The young cast members include Mikaela Belsky, Michael Fanelli, Rachel Geller, Elena Golub, Ben Hirschhorn, Josh Hirschhorn, Emma Kantor, Kaci Kaplan, Lucas Katz, Parris Kelly, Denis Mazariegos, Jonathan Rockhill, Bella Scarselli, Lilly Sterenberg, Brooke Strutin and Jeremy Werner.

After a short-lived Broadway run in 2008, Tony-winning composer Brown (Parade, Songs for a New World) and librettists Dan Elish and Robert Horn re-explored the work during a test run at the French Woods Performing Arts Camp in summer 2009.

Brown previously told Playbill.com that he and his collaborators "loved the show we put on Broadway, but felt that 13's future life would be well served by taking one more shot at certain sections of the piece, particularly those sections that might not make as much sense to an audience outside of New York City." Music Theatre International now licenses the reworked version of the musical.

The revised version premiered in Houston at the Theatre Under the Stars the following fall, featuring the young members of the Academy at Theatre Under The Stars' Humphreys School of Musical Theatre. 13 was developed at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and Goodspeed Musicals' Norma Terris Theatre in Connecticut. The musical premiered on Broadway Sept. 16, 2008, and ran through Jan. 4, 2009.

Here’s how the Children's Acting Company bills the work: "13 The Musical is a grown-up story about growing up! When his parents get divorced and he's forced to move from New York to a small town in Indiana, Evan Goldman just wants to make friends and survive the school year. Easier said than done. The star quarterback is threatening to ruin his life and his only friend, Patrice, won't talk to him. The school freak sees an opportunity for blackmail and someone is spreading the nastiest rumors. 13 is an hilarious, high-energy musical for all ages about discovering that cool is where you find it, and often where you least expect it."

Tickets are available by phoning (212) 579-4230 or by visiting iseats.net. The McGinn/Cazale Theatre is located at 2162 Broadway (4th Floor), at West 76th Street in Manhattan.
