Ahrens and Flaherty's My Favorite Year Gets NYC Concert Reading April 22-May 4

Musicals Tonight!, the downtown Manhattan company that revives vintage and overlooked musicals, focuses on a more recent show, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's My Favorite Year, April 22-May 4.

The musical inspired by the film of the same name was produced by Lincoln Center Theatre in 1992-93 (37 performances at the Beaumont). Book was by Joseph Dougherty, based on the screenplay. Andrea Martin won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress, and Tim Curry and Lainie Kazan were also nommed for Tonys.

Flaherty told Playbill On-Line the musical is available for licensing, but it's not one of the more popular shows in the Ahrens-Flaherty catalog (their Lucky Stiff gets more performances in stock and amateur theatres). Flaherty said My Favorite Year was an effort to capture sounds of 1950s New York showbiz. He said it's a show he and lyricist partner Ahrens would like to revisit one day, to see if it might be refined.

For now, the shoestring-budget Musicals Tonight! revisits the show, which focuses on the personalities involved in making a live comedy program for network TV, and what happens when a drunken Hollywood star is guesting.

The cast includes David Ranson as Benjy Stone, the gopher on the set; Philip Hoffman as Sid Caesar-like TV star King Kaiser; Steve Routman as head writer Sy Benson; Donna Coney Island and Sam Sagenkahn as co writers Alice and Herb (Andrea Martin played Alice); and Carey Anderson as Benjy's love interest, K.C. Downing. David Stoller is Hollywood leading man, Alan Swann, who must be chaperoned by Benjy. Mary Ellen Ashley plays Belle, Benjy's overbearing mother, with Wayne Pretlow as ex-boxer stepfather Rookie Carroca.

The score of the Broadway show is preserved on a cast album. Musicals Tonight! presents at the MainStage of the 14th Street YMHA, 344 E. 14th Street. All tickets are $19. For information or reservations, call (212) 206-1515 or visit www.smarttix.com.
