The Dutch language production of Aida was named Best Musical of the Year at the annual John Kraaijkamp Musical Awards on April 23.

Broadway has the Antoinette Perry Awards. London has the Laurence Olivier Awards. And, the Netherlands has the John Kraaijkamp Musical Awards. The Dutch equivalent of the Tonys and the Oliviers are awarded yearly to artists who exhibit "exceptional creative and artistic achievement.

Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida, which is currently playing Amsterdam's Fortis Circustheater garnered two other awards as well: Bastiann Ragas, who plays Radames, won the Best Actor Award, and Martine Bijl received the Best Translation Award.

Aida received the most nominations of any of this year's musicals, including noms for Best Musical, Best Translation, Best Leading Actor, Best Leading Actress and Most Promising New Talent.

The musical, which tells the story of a love triangle between the Nubian princess Aida, the Egyptian princess Amneris and the soldier Radames whom they both love, continues to play on Broadway at the Palace Theatre. Tickets for the New York production are available by calling (212) 307 4747.
