Actress Anne Heche, suffering from a respiratory infection, is expected to return to Broadway's Proof Friday July 5 after missing performances June 3 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, a spokesman said.

Her understudy, Caroline Bootle, went on for the Wednesday matinee and will play any missed performances (including July 3 evening).

The second replacement cast of the Tony-winning production only just began July 2 under the direction of Daniel Sullivan. Heche is the marquee-name actress who plays the emotionally anguished Catherine, the daughter of a mentally ill math genius. In the Pulitzer Prize-winner by David Auburn, Catherine may or may not have inherited her father's gift — and sickness.

Heche was said to be under the weather in the days prior to the July 2 launch, and after her Tuesday performance sought the care of a doctor who told her to rest in order to recover from a respiratory ailment.

It was not known June 3 which July 5 show she would return for; the play is on a special holiday schedule with no performance July 4 and two shows Friday. The new cast includes Len Cariou as father Robert, Neil Patrick Harris as suitor Hal and Kate Jennings Grant as concerned sister Claire.
