Classical Music Alabama Symphony Names Music Director British conductor Justin Brown has been appointed music director of the Alabama Symphony, the orchestra announced.
Brown will assume the post at the beginning of the 2006-07 season. He replaces Richard Westerfield, who left in 2004 after six years with the ASO.

Brown is a regular guest conductor with English and Scandinavian orchestras, and has led the Stuttgart Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Lisbon's Teatro San Carlo, and the Norwegian Opera. He is also a pianist who appears in chamber groups, in recital, and conducting from the keyboard.

He first appeared with the ASO during the 2004-05 season, one of 11 candidates invited to guest-conduct the orchestra. He returned for two weeks of concerts last month.

"The search committee was dedicated to selecting a music director that would build upon our orchestra's considerable strengths and take them to even higher levels of artistry and recognition," ASO president Charlie Brown said. "In Justin Brown we see the passion, talent, and vision to accomplish these goals. We are also very excited about the charisma and energy Maestro Brown brings to this position and know that he will quickly become a valuable member of our local and state communities."
