Gilbert, who is music director of Santa Fe Opera and chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philhamonic, will also lead the orchestra in performances on February 17 and 18 of Brahms' Symphony No. 3 and Schumann's Symphony No. 1 ("Spring").

This will be Gilbert's second Berlin debut in recent weeks, following his appearance with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester on January 19.

Gilbert said, "This is an unexpected and thrilling opportunity. It's an honor to be stepping in for Maestro Haitink and I look forward to doing this classic repertory with this most wonderful of orchestras."

Gilbert returns to the U.S. later this month for return engagements with the San Francisco Symphony, followed by performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducting Mahler's Symphony No. 9 in early March. He will lead the Santa Fe Opera in the North American premiere of Thomas Ads's opera The Tempest on July 29.
