Thomas Kakuska, violist with the Alban Berg String Quartet, died July 4, Gramophone magazine reports. He was 64 years old, and died of cancer.

The Vienna-born Kakuska, who also played violin, joined the Wiener Solisten at age 20, and in 1963 became the leader of the European String Quartet. He also played with the Vienna Tonk‹nstler Orchestra and the Vienna String Trio. He joined the Alban Berg Quartet in 1981.

In his solo career, Kakuska played concertos by Hindemith and Elgar, as well as premieres of works by Lucca Lombardi and Joji Yuasa. He also taught at Cologne's Hochsch‹le f‹r Musik for more than 30 years.
