Alive Mind, which is the documentary arm of Richard Lorber's Lorber HT Digital, will handle the theatrical and home video release of the film. "Theater of War" debuted as part of the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival.
Screenings of "Theater of War" are currently planned at Coolidge Corner in Boston, Walker in Minneapolis, Facets in Chicago, the Loft Cinema in Tucson, the Wexner Center in Columbus and the Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg. The DVD will be likely be available to consumers in 2010.
The documentary follows Streep as she creates the central role in Tony Kushner's adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's political drama. According to press notes, "Though this film could easily have been crafted into a star vehicle for Streep and Kevin Kline, Walter instead digs deeply into Brecht's motives and politics, unearthing the playwright's famed and famously clever testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee – the day after which he fled from the United States. 'Theater of War' is about theatre and war, capitalism and Marxism, the postwar anti-Communist hysteria of the 1950s, and one literary genius' ability to make art from them all."
In summer 2006, former Public Theater artistic director George C. Wolfe staged Mother Courage at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. In addition to Streep and Klein, the starry cast included Austin Pendleton, Jack Noseworthy and Jenifer Lewis.
Alive Mind has also released the documentary of the 1968 musical Hair, as well as "Kiki and Herb Live at the Knitting Factory." For further information, visit AliveMindMedia.
