Classic Arts News All 22 Mozart Operas to Be Performed at 2006 Salzburg Festival The Salzburg Festival will produce all of Mozart's operas in its 2006 season, the Associated Press reports.
Next year's festival, which opens July 23, 2006, commemorates the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth, in the city where he was born, with this marathon set of performances, including new productions of Le nozze di Figaro and Idomeneo. The festival lasts for six weeks.

Salzburg Festival director Peter Ruzicka said that the seven most-performed Mozart operas "would have been too little for Salzburg. The idea is to be able to examine the development of this unique genius and to contrast it with the music of the 21st century."

Ruzicka told the AP he planned to hire "excellent. . . singers on the highest international level."

According to the Austria Press Agency, there have already been inquiries by people who want to attend performances of all 22 operas.
