Murray Schisgal was nominated for an Oscar for the cross-dressing comedy "Tootsie" in 1983; in 2001, he's bringing the new gay-themed comedy, We Are Family, to the stage. Sacramento Theatre Company hosts the world premiere, opening April 21 for a run through May 13. STC artistic director Peggy Shannon directs.

We Are Family's protagonist Sam Kogan finds himself dissatisfied with heterosexuality after three divorces and numerous affairs. Convinced his inabilty to keep a relationship with women means he's gay, Sam decides to move back to his old neighborhood and test out his theory on his two best friends, Billy and Mario. Schisgal's other plays include The Typists, Fragments, Twice Around The Park and Luv.

Allan Miller (Death of a Salesman at South Coast Repertory and Substance of Fire at Seattle Repertory) is Sam Kogan. Also in the cast are Charles Dean (Billy Weller), Matt K. Miller (Mario Gianni) and Cynthia Mace (Laura Weller).
