Classic Arts News Angela Gheorghiu Joins Philadelphia Orchestra for Gala January 28 The Philadelphia Orchestra will mark the 149th anniversary of the storied Academy of Music, its former home, with a gala concert featuring soprano Angela Gheorghiu on January 28.
The annual Academy of Music Concert and Ball raises money to preserve the Academy of Music, where the orchestra performed from its founding in 1900 until it moved to the Kimmel Center in 2001. The orchestra still owns the hall, which houses the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and other groups.

The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy, will feature the overture to Rossini's The Thieving Magpie, Respighi's The Pines of Rome, and arias from Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur and Puccini's La rondine and Madama Butterfly. Charles Dutoit, the artistic director of the Philadelphia Orchestra's summer concerts at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, will lead the anniversary concert for the third time.

The concert will be followed by a champagne dinner and ball at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue.
