News "Annie" Among Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films of Weekend The movie musical remake of "Annie," which stars Academy Award nominee Quvenzhané Wallis in the title role alongside Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx, earned $16,300,000 over the Dec. 19-21 weekend.

That figure makes the Sony film the third highest-grossing film of the weekend just ended.

The top-grossing motion picture was "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," which took in $56,220,000. Other top earners were "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" ($17,300,000), "Exodus: Gods and Kings" ($8,065,000) and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" ($7,750,000).

"Annie" opened in cinemas nationwide Dec. 19.

Directed by Will Gluck, the film features a screenplay by Gluck and Aline Brosh McKenna based on the musical stage play Annie by Thomas Meehan (book), Charles Strouse (music) and Martin Charnin (lyrics).
