News Another Day, Another Destiny: New Les Miz Makes U.S. Premiere at Paper Mill; Tour to Follow Producer Cameron Mackintosh's new production of Les Misérables, newly directed and designed for its 25th anniversary, makes its American premiere starting Nov. 19 in an engagement at Paper Mill Playhouse that prefigures a 2011 U.S. tour.

The all-new production of the international hit musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg has new directors (Laurence Connor and James Powell) and "reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo."

This new Les Miz features Lawrence Clayton as Jean Valjean, Betsy Morgan as Fantine and Andrew Varela as Javert. The Paper Mill opening night is Nov. 28. Performances continue in Millburn, NJ, to Dec. 30, after which the staging flies to Philadelphia for the Jan. 4, 2011, start of the tour.

The cast also features Michael Kostroff as Thénardier, Shawna Hamic as Madame Thénardier, Jeremy Hays as Enjolras, Chasten Harmon as Eponine, Justin Scott Brown as Marius and Jenny Latimer as Cosette. Katherine Forrester and Anastasia Danielle Korbal alternate in the role of Young Cosette. The actors alternating in the role of Gavroche are Lewis Grosso and Josh Caggiano. At certain performances, Ron Sharpe will play the role of Jean Valjean.

The ensemble includes Richard Todd Adams, Richard Barth, Cathryn Basile, Julie Benko, Cole Burden, Briana Carlson-Goodman, Casey Erin Clark, Jon Fletcher, Jason Forbach, Lucia Gianetta, Ian Patrick Gibb, Cooper David Grodin, Ben Gunderson, Cornelia Luna, Benjamin Magnuson, Jason Ostrowski, John Rapson, Rachel Rincione, Heather Jane Rolff, Sarah Shahinian, Alan Shaw, Joseph Spieldenner,Joe Tokarz, Aliya Victoriya and Natalie Weiss.

Mackintosh's new production of Les Misérables has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer from the original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel and additional material by James Fenton. It's designed by Matt Kinley (who was inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo) with costumes by the original production's Andreane Neofitou and additional costumes by Christine Rowlands, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Mick Potter. Production stage manager is Trinity Wheeler.

Clayton appeared in Broadway's recent Bells Are Ringing, plus The Civil War, Once Upon a Mattress and the original run of Dreamgirls. Morgan was a recent "liebeslieder" in Broadway's A Little Night Music and an understudy Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Andre Varela is a veteran of the original Broadway engagement of Les Miz, playing a variety of roles toward the end of the run. He also appeared in Little Women.

Based on Hugo's classic novel, Les Miz is an epic story of survival and sacrifice amid great social change. The famous pop-opera score includes the classic songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Stars," "Bring Him Home," "Do You Hear the People Sing?," "One Day More," "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables," "Master of the House" and many more.

Les Misérables originally opened in London at the Barbican Theatre on Oct. 8, 1985, transferred to the Palace Theatre on Dec. 4, 1985, and moved to its current home at the Queen's Theatre on April 3, 2004.

Les Misérables will play the following performance schedule at Paper Mill: Wednesdays at 7 PM, Thursdays at 1:30 PM & 7 PM, Fridays at 7 PM, Saturdays at 1:30 PM & 7 PM and Sundays at 1:30 PM & 7 PM.
