News Antony and Cleopatra Launches Old Globe's Summer Shakespeare Fest, June 25 The Old Globe Theatre's 2004 Summer Shakespeare Festival kicks off its new repertory season in San Diego June 25 with Antony and Cleopatra.

Antony and Cleopatra, As You Like It, and The Two Noble Kinsmen will run in repertory at the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre through Oct. 3. Presenting the shows in repertory marks a return — after over 20 years — to a tradition that began with founding member Craig Noel.

Darko Tresjnak, who directed the Globe’s 2002 staging of Pericles and also staged Two Noble Kinsmen at The Public Theatre in New York, will spearhead the annual Shakespeare Festival as artistic director. He will direct Antony and Cleopatra (June 25-Oct. 3) and The Two Noble Kinsmen (July 2-Sept. 24) while associate artistic director Karen Carpenter directs As You Like It (June 29-Oct. 1).

One company has been cast to perform all three plays in repertory in the outdoor venue. Among the actors pulling double (and some triple) duties are Liam Craig, Bree Elrod, Graham Hamilton, Charles Janasz, Katie MacNichol, Jonathan McMurtry, James Joseph O'Neil, Gregor Paslawsky, Brian Sgambati, Daniel Jay Shore, Dan Snook, Sara Surrey, Greg Thornton, Deborah Taylor and Bruce Turk. The ensemble also includes students in The Old Globe/USD Professional Actor Training Program: Brian Bielawski, Rod Brogan, Matthew Gaydos, Ross Hellwig, Jenni-Lynn McMillin, Edelen McWilliams, Michael Newman, Jon A. Sampson, Neil Shah, Jennifer Stewart, Carolyn Stone, Michael Wrynn, Zura Young and Karen Zippler.

The design team for the festival includes Ralph Funicello (scenic), Linda Cho (costume - Anthony and Cleopatra), Lewis Brown (costume - As You Like It), Linda Cho (costume - The Two Noble Kinsmen), York Kennedy (lighting), Christopher Walker (sound), Karl Fredrik Lundeberg (composer - As You Like It) and Michael Creason (original music and sound score - The Two Noble Kinsmen). Dakin Matthews serves as dramaturg (Anthony and Cleopatra, As You Like It) and Steve Rankin provides fight direction.

The three Shakespeare stagings are part of a five-play summer season at the California complex which also includes the current staging of The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow (through July 18) and the upcoming musical Lucky Duck (July 10-Aug. 15) — to play in the Cassius Carter Centre Stage and Old Globe Theatre, respectively.
