Carter, who was recently on the boards as Mrs. Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie, told Playbill On-Line, "Hal Holbrook and I have two — and now a third — play that we are going to try, want, hope to do together. These plays would be Broadway-bound. They're new plays — the first play, I don't think I'm allowed to say anything about it. The first one is not a two character play, but play number two and three are two-character plays. It's very exciting.
"The first play that we will be able to talk about in another month, will tour, and if it tours well, it will come into town, and Hal and I will be thrilled to be onstage together."
Before that happens, however, Carter will head to the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. in June 2005 to star in Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan. Carter will play Mrs. Erlynne in the comedy, which will be directed by Keith Baxter.
Dixie Carter is best known for her work as Julia Sugarbaker on the long running comedy "Designing Women." She received great acclaim for her work as Maria Callas in the Broadway run of Master Class and was most recently on Broadway as Mrs. Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Her other theatrical credits include A Woman of No Importance, Love Letters, Pal Joey, Sextet, A Coupla White Chicks Sittin' Around Talkin', Fathers and Sons, Jesse and the Bandit Queen (Theatre World Award) and Taken in Marriage, Fathers and Sons. Carter's solo recording is titled "Dixie Carter Sings John Wallowitch Live at the Carlyle."
Hal Holbrook's numerous Broadway credits include Do You Know the Milky Way?, After the Fall, Marco Millions, Incident at Vichy, Tartuffe, The Glass Menagerie, Man of La Mancha, Mark Twain Tonight!, The Apple Tree, I Never Sang for My Father, Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? and An American Daughter. He won a 1966 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his solo show, Mark Twain Tonight!, which he also reprised on Broadway in 1977. Holbrook's screen credits are numerous, and he is the recipient of Emmy Awards for his performances in "Lincoln," "Pueblo" and "The Bold Ones: The Senator."
