News As Thousands Cheer May Have Extended Run Off-Broadway It seems nearly impossible for the Drama Dept. to produce a play and not have it transfer to a larger Off-Broadway house for a longer run. The latest lucky candidate is the company's current hit, the 1933 Irving Berlin-Moss Hart revue As Thousands Cheer. Drama Dept. Rosenberg wouldn't say which houses were being considered. The Lucille Lortel, the recent home of Drama Dept's As Bees in Honey Drown has been taken by the Uta Hagen production of Donald Margulies' Collected Stories. Savion Glover will resume his limited engagement tap performance on July 6 at the Variety Arts, the erstwhile home of the Drama Dept. revival of Kaufman and Lardner's June Moon. But that show is scheduled to end July 25, making an August move of As Thousands Cheer possible. Another potential destination is the Century Center Theatre off Union Square.

Cheer is now playing at the Greenwich House Theatre, where it was extended until July 18 before even opening. The show features such songs as "Heatwave," "Through a Keyhole," "How's Chances?" and "Supper Time." Judy Kuhn (Les Miz, Chess) and Mary Beth Peil (A Cheever Evening) star in this revival, alongside Paula Newsome, Kevin Chamberlin (Triumph of Love), Howard McGillin (She Loves Me) and B.D. Wong (M. Butterfly). Christopher Ashley (Jeffrey) directs. Kathleen Marshall choreographs.
