News As You Like It, Starring Sienna Miller and Dominic West, Spearheads Young Vic’s “Walkabout” Season The actress Sienna Miller, more in the headlines at the moment for her relationship with Jude Law than for her acting abilities, will get a chance to show off her skills in a new London staging of As You Like It.

The Shakespeare comedy, set to open June 21 (previews begin June 3), will be directed by David Lan, and will co-star Helen McCrory, Dominic West and Reece Shearsmith.

Lan will set the action in late 1940’s France, complete with songs in the style of Yves Montand and Edith Piaf and shadows of the devastation wreaked by World War Two. Sonia Friedman will produce in association with the Young Vic, where Lan is artistic director. However, the show will play Wyndhams Theatre. Set and costume designs will be supplied by Richard Hudson.

Miller, a New Yorker by birth, trained at the Lee Strasberg Institute. Theatre work in New York includes Independence, A School for Scandal and Cigarettes and Chocolate. Her movie career includes “Alfie,” where she co-starred with Law.

She will play Celia, with Helen McCrory as Rosalind. McCrory’s recent London theatre bows include Five Gold Rings at the Almeida, and Old Times, Twelfth Night and Uncle Vanya all at the Donmar Warehouse (the latter two transferring to BAM in New York).

Dominic West plays Orlando. The role marks a return to the West End after a stint away working in film and TV, notably as Jimmy McNulty in HBO’s “The Wire.” His Broadway credits include Design for Living, and in London he won the Ian Charleson Award for The Seagull at the Old Vic. Reece Shearsmith, playing Jaques, is best-known as one of the comedy team The League of Gentlemen. The League made a London stage appearance in 2001 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and in 2002 Shearsmith played Yvan in Art at the Whitehall Theatre.

The production is part of the Young Vic’s “Walkabout” season while their South London base is being renovated. Other forthcoming shows include the Young Genius festival (a celebration of gifted young artists) at the Barbican Centre in autumn 2005, and Rufus Norris will direct the Christmas show, Tintin.
