The Praemium Imperiale is a global arts prize awarded annually by the Japan Art Association. Candidates are nominated in the following categories: painting, sculpture, architecture, music and theatre/film.

My Africa!, No-Good Friday, Nongogo, Hello and Goodbye, People are Living There, Boesman and Lena, Statements After an Arrest, Under the Immorality Act, Sizwe Banzi is Dead, Dimetos, The Island, A Lesson From Aloes, "Master Harold"…and the Boys, The Road to Mecca, A Place With the Pigs, Playland, Valley Song, The Captain's Tiger, Sorrows and Rejoicings, Exits and Entrances, Victory, Coming Home and The Bird Watchers. He is a three-time Tony nominee for direction and received a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2011.

The award in painting goes to Martial Raysse, sculpture goes to Giuseppe Penone, architecture goes to Steven Holl and music goes to Arvo Pärt.

The prize includes an award of about $150,000 and a gold medal for each recipient. The awards will be presented Oct. 15 in Tokyo.
