News Atlantic's Free Latino MixFest Will Feature New Musical By John Leguizamo Plus Works from Raúl Castillo, José Rivera and More Atlantic Theater Company will develop a new play by Raúl Castillo, the newest Atlantic resident playwright, along with works by John Leguizamo, José Rivera and Diane Rodriguez in its free Latino MixFest reading series June 12-27 at Atlantic Stage 2 (330 West 16th Street).

In the fifth year of Latino MixFest's commitment to engaging new work by Latino artists across the country, Atlantic will not only welcome Castillo as the second playwright to join the resident program this season, but will also engage Leguizamo, Rivera and Rodriguez for a series of workshops through the summer, including developing a new musical by Leguizamo and Stephen Chbosky.

Jaime Castañeda is the curator of the festival and is also Atlantic's artistic associate. Latino MixFest is made possible by the Time Warner Foundation.

The Last Book of Homer by José Rivera
June 12, 3 PM
"Numb Nuts is a screenwriter who gets his ass kidnapped by a drug cartel while shooting a movie in Mexico about the Trojan War. Battling their bad knees, beer bellies, cataracts, bad hearing, and bitter divisions of the past, his four brothers – ex-military guys nicknamed God, Buddha, Weasel, and Joseph Smith – come to Mexico for the rescue."

June 23, 4 PM
"The lives of a single mother and her teenage son are turned upside down one night when a wounded and desperate undocumented immigrant woman breaks into their trailer home in rural South Texas." The Sweetheart Deal by Diane Rodriguez
June 24, 3 PM
"1970. Mari and Will decide to leave their comfortable life behind to volunteer at El Malcriado, the underground newspaper covering the United Farm Workers struggle in Delano, CA. As the paper tries to keep up with the ongoing coverage and growing intensity of the farm workers movement, things become more volatile as Mari’s brother drops into town."

Pain in the Aztec! a new musical by John Leguizamo & Stephen Chbosky 
June 27, 2 PM
"A cowardly Aztec peasant learns to be brave and save what remains of the empire from the conquistadors by battling with his wits, rhymes, and randiness—thus gaining the respect of a warrioress he wants to crush with."
