Classic Arts News Austrian Province Will Remain 'Mozart-Free' Next Year The Austrian province of Styria has announced that it will remain "Mozart-free" in 2006, despite the much-publicized 250th anniversary of the composer's birth, the Deutsche Presse-Agentur reports.
Bernhard Rinner, head of the province's cultural service, noted that the programming and tourist activities planned elsewhere for the occasion are "overkill," with Vienna and Salzburg competing for high-profile events.

Rinner said, "We're offering—somewhat pointedly—a Mozart-free zone."

By excluding itself from the hype, the province (with its capital, Graz), does not rule out the possibility of Mozart operas. It simply, according to Rinner, "will not join in the Mozart overkill next year."
