News Barefoot in the Park Will Play Broadway's Cort Starting Jan. 24; Mizrahi Will Design Costumes Broadway's new production of Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park will begin performances Jan. 24, 2006, toward an opening of Feb. 16, the producers announced.

Also revealed late Oct. 21 was the production's costume designer. Isaac Mizrahi will design the 1960s period costumes for the play, directed by Scott Elliott. Mizrahi and Elliott last collaborated on the Broadway production of The Women.

Lead producers Robyn Goodman (Avenue Q, Altar Boyz) and Roy Gabay (Steel Magnolias, Metamorphoses) announced the latest news.

As previously reported, Elliott's production will star Amanda Peet, Patrick Wilson, Jill Clayburgh and Tony Roberts. This is the first Broadway production of the early Simon hit since it bowed in 1963.

"Neil Simon's second play, Barefoot in the Park is the classic romantic comedy about conservative young lawyer Paul Bratter (Patrick Wilson) and his free-spirited newlywed bride Corie (Amanda Peet)," according to the producers. "The comedy follows the young couple as they move from the giddy joy of a honeymoon at The Plaza into the crazy reality of starting married life in a fifth-floor walkup in New York City."

Barefoot in the Park will have set design by Derek McLane, lighting design by Jason Lyons, and sound design by Ken Travis. Additional casting will be announced (the brief appearances of workmen offer choice bit parts for character actors). Barefoot marks the Broadway debut of Peet ("Something's Gotta Give" and "The Whole Nine Yards"). Wilson has twice been nominated for a Tony Award for his leading roles in the musicals The Full Monty and Oklahoma! He was seen in last year's film "The Phantom of the Opera" and the acclaimed mini-series "Angels in America." Two-time Academy Award nominee Clayburgh is currently in Roundabout's A Naked Girl on the Appian Way. Two-time Tony Award nominee Roberts has appeared in over 20 Broadway plays and musicals. He replaced Robert Redford in the role of Paul Bratter during Barefoot's original Broadway run.

Starring Robert Redford and Elizabeth Ashley and directed by Mike Nichols, the original production was a huge hit, running for four years and over 1,500 performances. Nominated for four Tony Awards including Best Play, Barefoot in the Park won a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for Mr. Nichols. In 1967, Paramount Pictures made the play into a successful film starring Fonda and Redford, directed by Gene Saks.

Barefoot in the Park is being produced by Robyn Goodman and Roy Gabay, with Walter Grossman, Geoffrey Rich, Ruth Hendel, in association with Paramount Pictures.
